Route description
The Western Alps 4×4 off-road route (ALP1/PL) runs through the spectacular mountain ranges of the Alps on the border between France and Italy. It is one of the most scenic and well-prepared off-road routes in Europe, based on former military roads that are now open to off-road vehicles. It offers a true high-mountain driving experience on legal, open roads with exceptional alpine scenery.
The entire route is approximately 1350 km long and designed as a 14-day trip. Daily driving time does not exceed around 6 hours, making the pace comfortable and allowing plenty of time for sightseeing and relaxation. The route stretches from Chamonix-Mont-Blanc to Menton on the French Riviera, passing through some of the most interesting off-road sections in the Alps.
The route has a touring-expedition character and is suitable for stock off-road vehicles and 4×4 SUVs. It does not require a winch or extreme vehicle modifications, but it does require concentration, off-road driving skills, and resistance to heights. The route follows narrow rocky ledges, gravel switchbacks, and high-altitude mountain roads reaching nearly 3000 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest legal off-road routes in Europe.
Accommodation is mainly planned at campsites – legal, safe, and well-organized. This allows flexible day planning and self-catering, while numerous restaurants are available during the day on both the French and Italian sides of the Alps. Hotels and guesthouses are also available for those who prefer a higher standard of accommodation.
The route includes military passes and tunnels, gravel switchbacks, alpine lakes, and vast panoramic views, including views of Mont Blanc. Characteristic highlights include Sommeiller (2996 m), Fort Jafferau (2805 m), Cime de la Bonette (2715 m), Lake Serre-Ponçon, and atmospheric alpine towns such as Chamonix, Briançon, and Bardonecchia.
